Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking in Single and Molecular Quantum Dots
نویسندگان
چکیده
Classes of spontaneous symmetry breaking at zero and low magnetic fields in single quantum dots (QD’s) and quantum dot molecules (QDM’s) are discussed in relation to the ratio RW between the interelectron Coulomb repulsion and the harmonic confinement, using spin-and-space unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculations. These include Wigner crystallization for RW . 1, and formation of noncrystallized electron puddles localized on the individual dots in QDM’s, as well as spin-density waves in single QD’s, for RW , 1. Group theoretical analysis of symmetry breaking in two-dimensional quantum dots
We present a group theoretical study of the symmetry-broken unrestricted Hartree-Fock orbitals and electron densities in the case of a two-dimensional N-electron single quantum dot ~with and without an external magnetic field!. The breaking of rotational symmetry results in canonical orbitals that ~1! are associated with the eigenvectors of a Hückel Hamiltonian having sites at the positions det...
متن کاملThin spectrum states in bulk superconductors and superconducting grains
We show how a local pairing model for superconductivity can be used to describe the symmetry breaking mechanism in exact analogy to the case of quantum crystal and antiferromagnets. We find that there are low energy states associated with the symmetry breaking process which are not influenced by the Anderson-Higgs mechanism. The presence of these ’thin spectrum’ states in qubits based on superc...
متن کاملSymmetry Breaking and Fine Structure Splitting in Zincblende Quantum Dots: Atomistic Simulations of LongRange Strain and Piezoelectric Field
Electrons and holes captured in self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) are subject to symmetry breaking that cannot be represented in with continuum material representations. Atomistic calculations reveal symmetry lowering due to effects of strain and piezo-electric fields. These effects are fundamentally based on the crystal topology in the quantum dots. This work studies these two competing effect...
متن کاملFormation and control of electron molecules in artificial atoms: Impurity and magnetic-field effects
Interelectron interactions and correlations in quantum dots can lead to spontaneous symmetry breaking of the self-consistent mean field, resulting in the formation of Wigner molecules. With the use of spin-and-space unrestricted Hartree-Fock ~sS-UHF! calculations, such symmetry breaking is discussed for field-free conditions, as well as under the influence of an external magnetic field. Using a...
متن کاملSymmetry breaking and Wigner molecules in few-electron quantum dots
We discuss symmetry breaking in two-dimensional quantum dots resulting from strong interelectron repulsion relative to the zero-point kinetic energy associated with the confining potential. Such symmetry breaking leads to the emergence of crystalline arrangements of electrons in the dot. The so-called Wigner molecules form already at field-free conditions. The appearance of rotating Wigner mole...
